October, 2025

October 2nd, 2025, 4:14 p.m. - Ending funding for the research featured in this book is going to wind up screwing everyone

40. Replaceable You (Mary Roach)
As always, fascinating and extremely educational. The day I don't want to read a book by Mary Roach is the day I need a complete psych evaluation.

Up next: The Impossible Fortune (Richard Osman)

October 11th, 2025, 5:52 p.m. - Stories in quiet corners

41. The Impossible Fortune (Richard Osman)
I'm pleased to report that Joanna is 80 percent less annoying in this book than in the previous installments in the series (which is especially great because she has a much bigger role here). I'm even more pleased to report that Kendrick is back, and still delightful, though in different ways now. My only issue is that by adding more and more characters, Osman sometimes neglects the established ones. He needs to find a better balance.

Up next: The Ghostwriter (Julie Clark)

October 18th, 2025, 2:01 p.m. - Sigh, I can't believe 1975 was 50 years ago

42. The Ghostwriter (Julie Clark)
My expectations were really low because I didn't like Clark's last book much, but I wound up loving this. It was a creative approach to a common trope, and the way it unfolded, I kept being surprised by developments and wondering what really happened. It's been described as a slow burn, but I thought it moved at the perfect pace.

Up next: Not Quite Dead Yet (Holly Jackson)

October 26th, 2025, 12:54 p.m. - How to solve your own murder

43. Not Quite Dead Yet (Holly Jackson)
I went back and forth between wanting to savor the story and wanting to rush through it to see if my suspicions were right (they were). Jackson is such a great storyteller.

Up next: Hot Wax (M.L. Rio) and King Sorrow (Joe Hill) – see you in 800-something pages
